Introducing a New Book- 2nd Printing ...

“PIONEERING PARA PLAINS:

Early stories and Primitive Methodism

At Burton and Bolivar"

By Edwin A Curnow

Last year the Rev Ted Curnow released his latest book on the settlement on Para Plains, S.A. The first printing sold out and now a 2nd printing has been done, available only at the History Centre.

Fascinating stories capture local history spanning 100 years with details of the early days of Burton/Bolivar area west of Salisbury.

The heart of the small community revolved around the local Chapel, the arrival of a ‘fiery’ Methodist missionary, also the roadside hotel that served the Burra teamsters, farmers and hay carters.

The detailed history of the Chapel, its expansion north and its one-teacher school are central to a unique story preserved for your enjoyment in this well researched and presented book by Ted Curnow.   Foreword is by well-known local author, Max Fatchen.

Soft cover $40; plus postage and packing $10 (for one copy);

approx. $16 for two copies posted to the same address.

Only available from the Uniting Church History Centre, 44a East Avenue, Black Forest SA 5035.

Great Hymns of Faith

GREAT HYMNS OF FAITH sung by THE ADELAIDE HARMONY CHOIR, under the direction of John Hall, with Mark Symons at the organ of Wesley Uniting Church, Kent Town (the recording was made in September 2001).

The ADELAIDE HARMONY CHOIR (originally founded under the auspices of the YWCA) was formed in 1946 with Lewis Dawe as its first conductor - its aim was "to be of service among the churches on pleasant Sunday afternoons".

Over the years their performances of Handel’s "Messiah", Bach’s "St Matthew Passion" and "Mass in B Minor", Mendelssohn’s "Elijah" and Haydn’s "Creation" have been received by Adelaide audiences with great appreciation; their carol services at Christmas time have brought joy to many thousands.  As well as its many concerts, the choir has assisted church organisations in their fund-raising efforts.

CD consists of 22 well-known hymns and is available from the Uniting Church History Centre $22 (inc. GST).   Plus $5 for postage and packaging.     EMAIL
